Recovery after treatment: OMER-BE

How does the recovery process unfold after starting treatment?

While a significant number of people manage to recover without professional assistance, treatment remains the recommended route to recovery for persons with severe and prolonged addiction issues. However, in Belgium, there is a lack of data on treatment outcomes in addiction care, and existing data often have various limitations. In healthcare, increasing attention has been given to subjective outcome indicators such as quality of life and well-being after treatment. In this context, Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) and Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) are used. PROMs measure symptoms, quality of life, and well-being as experienced by patients, while PREMs evaluate how the provided care is experienced.

The objective of the OMER-BE study (Outcome Measurement and Evaluation as a Routine practice in alcohol and drug services in Belgium) is to develop a self-report instrument based on the recent and internationally validated ICHOM Standard Set for Addictions. With this instrument, PROMs and PREMs will be measured alongside client characteristics in various treatment settings for individuals with alcohol and drug problems. The study aims to examine how these issues evolve during and after treatment. Additionally, we want to explore how this self-reporting instrument can be routinely implemented in addiction care in Belgium."

The research

In total, approximately 250 individuals will be surveyed in Flanders, Brussels, and Wallonia. This will include various treatment modalities for alcohol and drug service users, such as outpatient counseling, substitution treatment, residential psychiatric treatment, and drug-free therapeutic communities. Participants will be contacted at the beginning of treatment and 45, 90, and 180 days later for the research. The collected information will provide insights into the treatment's effect, how it is experienced, and various recovery indicators. Additionally, a small group of participants will undergo in-depth interviews after 6 months, aiming to gain more profound insights into the experiences of healthcare service users regarding treatment and recovery trajectories.

For this project, we are collaborating with colleagues from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Sciensano. Prof. Wim van den Brink (University of Amsterdam) is involved as a senior expert in this project.
