What does our research group do?

Enabling voices

The Recovery & Addiction research group investigates various forms of support (such as outpatient treatment or residential care) to promote recovery in young people and adults with addiction or other forms of mental vulnerabilities. We deem it essential to amplify the voices of individuals with addiction and lived experiences of recovery - as well as those of their surroundings, in this process.

Focusing on quality of life

With our research, we aim to contribute to the recognition of individuals with substance use and other mental vulnerabilities as equal citizens and to improve their quality of life and societal participation. While professional assistance can support the recovery process, it is not a necessary condition for recovery. Informal support sources, such as the social network, are equally important. Self-help groups such as AA or NA can also play a significant role in the recovery process for individuals with addiction. In our research, significant attention is given to supporting vulnerable groups that may be at risk of being marginalized within the healthcare system, such as individuals with disabilities or additional mental vulnerabilities, detainees and internees, women and mothers with young children, or individuals with a migration background.

Symbol for our vision

Our research is primarily focused on vulnerable groups in society. Amplifying the voices of these individuals heard and improving their quality of life are our main motivations.

The search for the visual representation of our research group led us to the beautiful symbolism of the nautilus shell:

The shell is a symbol of a safe place for vulnerable individuals or a refuge where one can share their story in complete confidence.
'Coming out of one's shell' means daring to expose oneself, making one's voice heard.
The process of personal development is not linear but cyclical, where self-reflection and 'encountering oneself' are crucial.
The different chambers in the nautilus shell represent the phases in the growth of our lives. They symbolize the connection with ourselves, our past, and our environment.
